When I first read this quote, I got all sentimental thinking about love and understanding and relationships. Then a new meaning emerged…I need my space! As introverts in the industry having our space and solitude is crucial.
We don’t create our best ideas surrounded by a team of 10 yammering individuals in a conference room. And we don’t create our best ideas with 15 looky-loos firing unsupported feedback at us either. We require alone time and brainstorming in silence. A place where we can completely let our guard down and allow all the crazy ideas we’ve created to pour out.
Having friends, family and even industry colleagues in your life that understand this is necessary to the wellbeing of our goals. Timing is everything when it comes to achieving your dreams and if you’re constantly interrupted with everyone’s distractions, it will be hard for you to develop ideas you’ve set aside time for.
To some, it will look like you’re being a diva for needing your space, but at the end of the day they’re not paying your bills! Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for taking time to go after something you are trying to accomplish. If you need 2-3 hours a day, 2 whole days out of the week, or a month to develop your song, choreography, or design….then DO IT!
At the end of the day, we are the guardians of our own time. You get out of life what you put in. So let’s protect our lone moments of creativity and encourage those closest to us to do the same.
